Subject: [HALEY] John Hailey family of Caroline County VA

I am enclosing some notes and tree that I have gathered for the John Haley family of Caroline County VA. This would be the same John Haley that my Thomas Hailey, later of Brunswick County VA, was probably the executor for in 1872 prior to his removal to the Lunenburg/Brunswick area.

Would appreciate posting by anyone with more information on the early origins of this family.

Joseph Campbell served to appraise estates, along with Jacob Burrus, John Thompson, John Hampton, Robert Collins, John Haley and Robert Chandler.

Joseph and Elizabeth Campbell had eleven children: Elizabeth married Reuben Mitchell and died young; Amey married in 1786 to Meriday Haley and Jane to Caleb Mitchell. Matthew married before 1790 Margaret Haley.

Meriday and Margaret Haley were children of John and Mary Haley.

Matthew was born between 1760 and 1765 and married before 1790. He married Margaret Haley, the daughter of John and Mary Haley, and the sister of Meriday Haley.

Amey Campbell was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Campbell and was named for her grandmother, Amey Peatross. Amey married Meriday Haley (sometimes referred to as Meredith), a brother of Margaret and the son of John and Mary Haley. It is not unusual to find among the marriages in a family in colonial times that several brothers and sisters of one family had married several brothers and sisters of another family. They were usually two families who lived close to each other, or were bound together by some common endeavor, such as attending the same church.

Meriday Haley was born August 24, 1767, and he and Amey were married on November 30, 1786. Meriday died on March 1830. The names of only two of their children is known: a son, William Argyle Haley, who was born on February 26, 1797 and Joseph Campbell Haley. Meriday owned Bolling Mill near Guinea, and lived there. The family has been researched for Mrs. Elizabeth Haley Cunningham of Cornelia, Georgia, by Mr. Norman Flythe, and the information comes from his records.

William Campbell, 3rd son of Joseph and Elizabeth Campbell, was probably born about 1775. He married Susannah Burruss, the daughter of William Burrus, on July 24, 1812, and lived near Golansville. In 1819, William owned 519 acres of land. He had purchased the home place from his mother's estate and seventy-six acres additionally in 1809, from Meriday Haley, Pleasant Burruss and John Terrell, individually. (Golanville was near the area of Polecat Creek called Quaker land. The Burrus and Terrell name would be found on area Quaker lists-MH)

The above information taken from the book entitled "Tidewater Virginia Families", by Virginia Lee Hutcheson Davis. Published by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc.; Pages 230, 345, 346, 348, 364.
