We were looking through the 1914-15 Kellys Directory of Southampton
when we discovered there used to be a workhouse in St Mary Street.

It give the following information

MEDICAL OFFICER: Henry William Russell Bencraft
13 Cumberland Place

CHAPLAIN Rev Silas William Stevens

MASTER OF THE WORKHOUSE Harold Senio

MATRON Mrs Senior

ASST MASTER F.G.Collins

SCHOOL MISTRESS: Miss French

PORTER: V.H. Gooch

INDUSTRIAL TEACHER
Girls, V.L. Tyrell

If anyone has anything on the old workhouse or knows of its exact location
we would be pleased
to hear from you
