Patriotic societies recognize John Handley as a veteran of The War of
1812 even though he died in 1811. The reason for this, I've been told,
is that he participated in events and skirmishes that took place in the
years prior to 1812... leading up to that war. I THINK these pre-war
soldiers could have served as early as the 1890's to qualify we
descendants for membership in some organizations.

In my copy of the research of Bertha Lewis Clark, John Handley's death
date is given as January 3.... that only muddies the waters! I have
"shared" that date with internet-dom on 2 different webpages and on
FTM's World Family Tree disks. I definitely want to correct my
information when a conclusion is reached.
