IV and V GENERATIONS

Moses Hanks*
b- July 15, 1746 in Va. (Joiaisy Hanks Bible)
b- July 15, 1748 in Va. (Thos. Hanks Bible)
d- Aug. 19, 1831 in Maury County, Tenn., left a will, May 27, 1831,
Oct 6, 1831, son Elijah sole executor.
m- Aggatha Dodson (or Neville)
They were residing in Pitts. Co., Va. in 1782, in 1785, and in 1790.
Shortly before 1800 they and other members of their family moved
to Ky., Moses entered and patented 200 a. on waters of Pitman Cr.,
in Pulaski Co. Dec. 4, 1798. But Moses, like his predessor,
kept seeking the Promised Land, sold the 200 acres, 12-14-1806,
for X 150, sold 128 acres for X 110, these right tidy sums gave
him capital an he moved to Maury Co.,Tenn. David Puckett, a
boundry line neighber was one of the witnesses to the deeds.
Puckett was kin to William Baber, both from Pitts, Co., Va.
David Puckett, and William Baber removed to Greene Co., Ind.
William Baber, who fought at Guilford C.H. was the great great
grandfather fo this compiler.
Most of the members of Moses Family went with him to Tenn.,
the Hills, the Dodsons, and the Fitzgeralds. For a more
complete history of the family see the monograph by Gladys
Lee Hanks Johnson (Mrs. Chas. G.) of Houston, Texas.

*An earlier researcher, Mrs. Hitchcock, placed Moses Hanks as a son
of John and Mary Mott Hanks, but her authority has not ben located
by this complier. There is a family tradition that he was a brother
of an Abraham Hanks.
However, Mr. Hanks Neville Hill, born 3-10-1813 and survived until
1898, the grandson of Moses, made a statement to E.E. McClure, in
May 1890, to the effect that; "Grandfather (Moses Hanks) was born
in Virginia where his parents died leaving him an orphan at an
early age.
This eliminates John and Mary Mott Hanks for they survived past
1782, one record, and past the 1790 census. It also eliminates
other Hanks patriarchs who lived out their proverbial three score
and ten years, long past the birth of Moses. There are three known
possible candidates to be his father, Robert, William, and Luke Hanks I.
Luke Hanks I died in either late 1756 or January 1757. His first
wife Elizabeth died before 1752. The death of these two known
Hanks people left their choldren without parents and Moses, being
born in 1756 or 1758, would have been left "and orphan at an early
age"
There is not doubt: Moses was a son of Luke Hanks I.
