I found this yesterday in Centennial Story of Texas Baptists, Baptist General
Convention of Texas, Dallas 1936. In the biography section it lists Thomas
Hanks as follows (page 81):

"The third Baptist preacher to come to Texas was Thomas Hanks who came from
Tennessee in 1829. He is credited with having secured and baptized the first
convert west of the Brazos River.

"We have such limited information relative to the character and ministry of
this man that we can only draw on our imagination and indulge our fancy in
this regard, and this privilege we readily grant to the readers of this
volume".

That second paragraph is almost too tempting for words! <G>

Page 245:

"According to Dr. Carroll and other historians, it was in the home of Moses
Shipman, near San Felipe, that the first Baptist sermon west of the Brazos
River was preached by the Reverend Thomas Hanks, in 1825, and it was also in
this home that the first public profession of faith was made by Mrs. Lydia
Allcorn in 1829. Her profession came in response to the preaching of Mr.
Hanks, but due to the fact that a Baptist church was not organized at
Independence until 1839, this first convert had to wait ten years for an
opportunity to be baptized, and to unite with a church".

Thomas Hanks (1786-1857) was the son of Moses and Aggatha Dodson Hanks. He
married Sarah Hill in Pulaski Co, KY and they lived in Maury Co., TN, McMinn
Co, TN and eventually Anderson Co., TX
