Janet, I cannot find a John Wesley Hanks who married
Josephine Mitchell. But here are some others:

John Wesley Hanks, b. c. 1838, GA; m (1) Anna; m. (2)
Mary Virginia Smith, 21 Dec 1887. He was son of John
Hanks, b. c. 1801, GA and Annie R_____, b. c. 1805,
NC.
John and Annie R. m. c. 1825. John was son of Joseph
Hanks who d. Mar 1819, Pulaski Co., GA.

John Wesley Hanks, b. 26 Mar 1844, Pittsboro, Chatham
Co., NC; d. in Columbia, Brazoria Co., TX. He was son
of John Armstrong Hanks and Euphemia Morris (m. 1830,
Pittsboro, NC). John Wesley enlisted in Confederate
Army, Co. G, 3rd NC Infantry, 14 Feb 1861. In battles
of Seven Pines, Cross Keys, Malvern Hill, 2nd
Manassas, South Mt., Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg,
Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Winchester, Mine Run,
Spottsylvania and Cold Harbor. wounded 4 times, taken
prisoner twice and exchanged.

John Wesley Hanks, b. 26 Mar 1810,Knox Co., TN; d. 25
Mar 1891, Breckenridge Co.KY. H m.Mrs. Caroline
Rollins Dowell, 1 Aug 1830.He was son of Luke Hanks,
son of Abraham.

Where did the deserted wife and the 10 children live?
I mean, where were they in the 1880 census when John
Wesley Hanks was in Prairie Co., AR? Have you looked
to see who his parents are - the 1880 census should
tell. He may have married again after he left his
first family.
