I don't mean to be contradictory, but there were/are many Hanks in Illinois,
especially the Chicago area that are descendants of the New England branch
of the family. However, that does not necessarily rule out the family
tradition of relationship to Lincoln. As you know, members of both the New
England Branch and the Southern Branch have claimed relationship to Lincoln.
As they surely are, at least as we go back to England.
