During your research have you come across a Lacy W. Hanks b. 1837 d.
1918.
He was married to Charlotte Shepherd b. 1840 d. 1924. I know they were
living in Louisa County, VA in 1850. They then moved to Grayson,
County,
VA. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Joseph Hanks researchers,

For those of you who are still wondering about the 1850 census, here is
a correction on the arithmetic error which changes the Ky. note. Born
in Va. could be regular or west.

Following are records that help establish the birth year of Joseph Hanks
Jr., son of Joseph and Nancy Lee Hanks of Nelson Co., Ky. Many
published genealogies put his birth year at 1784 to try to establish a
case for his mother to have been a second wife of Josephs. Though it
may be true Joseph Sr. had a second wife, a not uncommon occurrence for
the times, I think the records below do more to establish a birth year
of 1781 than 1784. We all know census records are notorious for
incorrect ages. However, a person had to be 21 to sell land or to give
up rights to inherited land. It is possible that Joseph Sr.'s widow
signed over the rights to the land in 1794 but Joseph would have had to
have signed again at age 21.

The age of Joseph Hanks, son of Joseph Hanks of Nelson Co.
Tombstone Record - died 4 April 1756 age 75 yrs. birth year 1781
1850 census - age 65 born Va., birth year 1785,
1840 census - age 30-40 born 1800-1810
1820 census - age 26-45, birth year by 1794
1801 sold rights to Nelson property - age 21 born 1780.

Joseph and Nancy Lee Hanks had children:
Thomas born 1759 as established by Rev. War pension
Joshua
William born 1765 as established by census records
Charles born c. 1769 as established by tax lists and La. marriage record
Elizabeth born 1771 as established by NFP Registers of Richmond Co., Va.
Mary
Nancy
Joseph born 1780/1781 as established by tombstone and land transactions
