Subject: [HARRELL] James Harrell of Mississippi
Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2012 11:25:26 -0400 (EDT)
This is another profile of a Harrell that I believe to be a descendant of
Abraham Harrell, the only clue being the name Lott. which only seems to
appear among Abraham's descendants. If anyone knows anything at all about
this group of Harrells, please contact me.
The ancestry of James Harrell remains unknown, but he had a son named
Lott which leads to speculation that he may have been a descendant of Abraham
Harrell, one of the “Core Harrells’.
35. Generation: 1. James HARRELL. James HARRELL was born circa 1798,
likely in North Carolina. The only available record of him is the 1830
Copiah County, Mississippi census record in which he is listed with a wife, two
children, and three slaves. There were several Harrells listed in the 1850
Copiah County census records that are his assumed sons. He is believed to
have married Nancy WILLIS (no record) and they had the following children:
James Henry, born 1824; David J., born 1825; John Wesley, born 1828; M.
A., born 1831; Lott, born 1838; and William D., born 1840.
35.1. Generation: 2. James Henry HARRELL. James Henry HARRELL was born
1824 in Copiah County, Mississippi, the possible son of James HARRELL and
Nancy WILLIS. He married first, Louisiana C. OSBORNE on 7 June 1848 in
Jefferson County, Mississippi and they had the following children: John James,
born 1849; Martha, born 1851; and Henry, born 1853.
Louisiana C. OSBORNE died in 1853 and James married second, Nancy ERWIN,
the daughter of James P. ERWIN and Sarah LONG, on 17 January 1854 in
Claiborne County, Mississippi. James and Nancy had the following children:
Alexander S., 16 Jun 1861; Charles H., born 21 March 1855; Mary, born 1858;
George Monroe, born 2 February 1862; Henry Rohelia, born 11 May 1867; Sarah
Virginia, 23 September 1868; and Sallie Christine, born 8 April 1870.
35.2. Generation: 2. John Wesley HARRELL. John Wesley HARRELL was born
1828 in Copiah County, Mississippi, the possible son of James HARRELL and
Nancy WILLIS. He married Margaret HYNUM on 3 December 1857 in Claiborne
County, Missippii, and they had the following children: Alice, born 1859;
Eliza Ann, born 25 February 1861; William Albert, born 5 May 1862; George
Thomas, born 14 October 1864; Christopher Ernest, born 31 October 1867; James
Griffin, born 13 August 1870; Charlotte, born 1878; and Henry S. born 1880.
John is believed to have died about 1885 in Jefferson County, Mississippi.
Margaret HYNUM died 4 March 1925 in Claiborne County, Mississippi.
35.2. Generation: 2. Lott HARRELL. Lott HARRELL was born 1838 in
Copiah County, Mississippi, the possible son of James HARRELL and Nancy WILLIS.
During the Civil War Lott enlisted as a private in Company H. of the 18th
Mississippi Infantry Regiment. He was apparently captured as he is also
listed in the Civil War Prisoner of War Records. Lott married Emily SCOTT on
31 January 1867 in Claiborne County, Mississippi and they had the
following children: Henry Lott, born 11 February 1868; James J., born 1870; Horace
E., born 20 March 1873; and Stonewall Jackson, born 14 January 1878.
