Subject: [HARTRUM] Ohio's Delaware county Hartrum roots

Hello all
There is great interest among many of our mailing list members in
resolving the Ohio Hartrum origins and the first families in Ohio.
So let's discuss what we have and what seem to be the problem areas.
If you can add to this or have any comments then please jump in. By
working together we should be able to answer the main questions.
Let's start with Ohio's Delaware county patriarchs -- Edward and
George (supposedly brothers).
Edward and his one marriage to Mary DAVENPORT is fairly certain. The
census data provides ages for Ed & Mary of: 1850 55 52, 1860 64 62,
1870 76 X -- so from these we get a birth year for Ed of Abt.1795
(the 1870 data was probably provided by an infirmary so its accuracy
is in doubt) and a birth place of NJ. Ed's gravestone has "Born 13
Oct 1795 aged 80 Years". There is no reason to doubt this.
Likewise, Mary's birth year from the census data is 1797-8 and also
born in NJ. Her gravestone has "Died Feb 21, 1863 aged 64Y 6M 21D"
(or maybe "20D"). This calculates to a birth date of 31-Jul-1798
which fits with the census data.
George's birth year is fairly certain based on census data -- 1850
55, 1860 66, 1870 76, 1880 86 -- so it should be 1794. I'm not sure
of the 1850 data's accuracy but we can say his birth year is either
1793 or 1794. He was born in NJ. Edward still fits OK as his
brother with his birth in Oct 1795.
George's first wife Anna THARP died before 1858. Anna's census data
for 1850 has her age as 63. As stated above, the 1850 data may be
inaccurate but it appears from this that Anna was older than George.
The reason I question the 1850 data's accuracy is that George &
Anna's place of birth in that census appears to be unknown. George's
was known for later censuses so it appears that someone else may have
provided the census information or that Anna did so and she didn't
know where either of them was born!
George next married Elizabeth PETERSON on 25-Jul-1858 in Delaware co.
Elizabeth's census data -- 1860 60, 1870 69, 1880 80 -- fixes her
year of birth as 1800. She was born in PA.
Now for the problem areas . . . .
While we have a reasonable handle on assigning the children to the 2
families, there are a couple of questions:
1. We have 2 sons, George and Benjamin, both apparently born in
1822. If we look at the proximity of these sons to the 2 sets of
parents it would seem that George is Ed & Mary's son, and that Ben is
George & Anna's -- or are George & Ben twins!?. This is not what's
currently believed! What data does anyone have that pertains to this
question?
2. There is a gravestone for Anna Hartrum in Fancher cemetery.
Cemetery records indicate this is the wife of George, a death date of
26-Jun-1852 and an age of 20Y 9M. We currently have 2 individuals in
the family tree using this death entry -- a.) George's wife Anna (but
we know she was older than George and about 66 at death); and b.) a
daughter Anna to Ed & Mary, who's shown as born in 1851 and was
included to satisfy the cemetery's age at death! Again, who can add
anything to this query? Can anyone get to Fancher cemetery to verify
the gravestone(s) there and the office records? We know that Anna
THARP died between 1850 and 1858 so this is likely her grave. Does
anyone know where George was buried?
Cheers, -- Dave
