Dear Nani and list,

I remembered you asking on the list a while back about
Charles Titcomb from Kauai. I've been reading The Hawaiian Kingdom vol1
by Kuykendall a very good trilogy about the Hawaiian Kingdom from Capt.
Cook to the downfall of the Monarchy.
In it I have found several mentions of your Charles Titcomb.
Now since this book is still copyrighted I cannot give you the text of
what Kuykendall wrote but he does list his sources and those are in the
public domain and I can get this information to you.
This is what Kuykendall says about Charles in my own words.
Charles was a early planter in the early 1800's on Kauai. He tried to
start a silk industry here which had little success due to bugs and the
fact that our winds kept stripping the leaves off the mulberry trees
necessary to feed his silk worms. But he had much better luck with his
coffee plantation. He was not the first to grow coffee here but was the
first on Kauai and was the first to start a coffee plantation here. The
first experiment with coffee was done here on Oahu in Manoa .
Here are the references that he gave and I will gladly look
them up for you.

Polynesian Sept. 4,1847 about his flourishing plantation
Jarves "Sketches of Kauai"
Jarves " Scenes and Scenery in the Sandwich Islands" pages 105-112,
164-169
article by "Tatler" in the Sandwich Island Mirror May 15,1840
Report of the department of the Interior, 1845 ,pp 11,14

Let me know if you have these or if you are interested in them.
Also to members of the list I do have a good memory but remember
that I'm doing a lot of reading on Hawaii and spend much time in the
archives and library here . If I am familliar with your names I always
keep a eye open for them and you never know when or where they will pop
up . There are also a few others here that do reading on our beautiful
islands and we will keep our eyes open for you. But we need the names of
the folks you are searching for .
Aloha
William Disbro
