Subject: DUNCAN born 1851 in Hawaii

Hello Listers,
I have been reading the list for a few weeks now and have enjoyed seeing
the diversity of requests. I have finally got the nerve up to ask this
question.
On the 1860 census for Contra Costa County in California, there was
listed a "Mary Duncan", age 9 years, born in "SandW. Is.". Mary was
listed under Robert and Jane Duncan, my gr-gr grandparents. The dilemma
is that the parents were married in 1853 in Scotland, and the mother was
not previously married, the father was not in Hawaii in 1851. I am
wondering if there are any early records of births in Hawaii, and how
accessible are they? The father, my gr-gr-grandfather was a sailmaker
on ships from Montrose, Scotland to Hong Kong. If he went from Hong
Kong to Hawaii, he could have picked her up. Mary may be a relative of
Robert Duncan. I know I may be chasing a red herring (after all, she
could have been visiting that day), but I thought I'd give this a try.
The listing for Mary actually read: Mary, with quotes under the
Duncan. I realize the census takers were not always accurate, and Mary
may not be a Duncan.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Linda Foiles
