It's possible they were testing for oil, natural gas
or geothermal at that time. There's no oil or gas
drilling there now, that I've heard of.

In the early part of the century, the US was building
up Pearl Harbor...they stored large quantities of oil
and other fuel there. Could he have been connected to
that sort of activity? Not sure how you'd find
records related to it.
