Jon,
Can't help you with a lookup as I'm not in Hawaii. However, sometimes in
writing churches you have to ask for a xerox copy of the original record or
a full copy. Most churches will only supply a typed certificate of the
event. I've written Our Lady of Peace before and it seems they only send
typed copies. Maybe someone else knows another way around it. Has Our Lady
of Peace been microfilmed by the LDS Family History Library? That would be
another way around it.
I see that you searched the census records. Have you searched the state
census records as well? Hawaii produced a couple from mid 1880s to 1895 or
so. You might his parents that way.
As for birth records, it's possible to find an entry in the birth registers.
I believe these have been microfilmed by the LDS FHL. (At least they have
been for Kauai). There are many birth indexes for Hawaii but the it's
confusing as the years and regions overlap and are incomplete. Your best
bet is to find it in the birth registers as this is the exact record on file
at the Dept. of Health for this period (no real certificates were issued in
HI until about 1905-1910). One other option might be delayed birth records.
If a birth record is not on file with the state, it's possible that your
ancestor applied for a delayed birth certificate in the 1940s or later.
This document would provide a tremendous amount of information.

my grandfather's baptism certificate from the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace
in Honolulu. When I wrote to them asking how I might obtain other family
records (marriages, baptisms, funerals, etc.) they sent me another copy of
the same baptism certificate I already had. Does anyone know if there is a
way to get other records from this church? Perhaps volunteers who might be
able to look? I have the names from the baptism certificate but no dates or
other pertinent information.

only possibility for getting additional information (I am open to
suggestions).
