Dee,
First, where were these people heading to when they left Hawaii? I have
found that the National Archives is the best place to check for ships
leaving Hawaii for California. You will probably have to go to one of
the National Archives to view the microfilm. Ancestry.com has some of
the ship manifests online, however, it is incomplete. The collection is
more complete after 1915 or so. I don't know of any place online where
there is an index or comprehensive database.

One thing to remember about birthdates is they are always
circumspect--even when the person themselves is giving the information.
When I write letters for information I would say ca 1888 or born between
1888 and 1894. What do the census records show for this person? You
might be able to get some sort of consensus by looking at a variety of
records.

I would also note the spelling variations. People who look up
information are not going to know that Souza could be Sousa or that
Medeiros might be Maderos or any other variation.

Thanks,
Melody

However, I have another birthdate from his death certificate, 26 February 1894. This info was given by my Grandmother, his wife. I am wondering if I should write to all of these places again using the 1894 date?
