Maggie,
In my research, I am constantly coming across the information that all the
Chinese in Hawaii had to have their pictures taken as a form of
identification. I have not been able to locate these pictures nor where
they are located. I will be in Hawaii the week of 8/8/06. I am staying
with my father who does not have a computer. We will try to set up
something so that we can look at our e-mails but not sure if this will be
workable. My father's phone number is 595-4374 in Hawaii.

A 1900 law required all Chinese in Hawaii to register and obtain a
certificate of residence. To obtain this certificate the applicant had to
submit to an investigation at the INS office. Proof of naturalizaion by the
kingdom of Hawaii or a certificate of Hawaiian birth before the island came
under the United States territorial status in 1900, or a special birth
cdertificate for Chinese born in Hawaii after 1900, were used to acquire
this certificate of residenc and citizenship.

There is also an Index to applicants for reissuance of certificates of
identity, c. 1903-1910.

I would appreciate any leads which would lead me to those photographs. I am
specifically looking for my grandmother's picutre. On my father's birth
certificate she is listed as Choy Heong. We are assuming this Choy is her
last name. My father is listed as Buk Tai Wong, Puck Tai Wong, Buck Tai
Wong. Wong is last name.

Thank you,
Priscilla Wagner
