Whitley manuscripts cont. from pt6

son of Joseph HAWKINS and Ann PARKER ROBINSON, and grandson of the above
John & Mary (Langford) HAWKINS. They moved from Henrico Co. VA to KY in 1840.
(Nathaniel Bacon, lawyer and member of Gov. Berkeley's council in VA, died in VA
1667, this one possible a descendant)

Marriage Bond--"Know all men that NATHANIEL BACON of the County of New Kent
and WILLIAM WADDILL of city of Richmond and held firmly bound unto Patrick
Henry, Esq. Governor of the Commonwealth of VA in the sum of 60 pounds current
money, to which payment will and truly be made, etc.dated 1 Apr 1786". The above
obligation is ssuch that whenever there is a marriage intended to be solemnized between
the above NATHANIEL BACON and ELIZABETH MEUX. of Henrico Co., Bk 2 page
82, Henrico Co. records, reads thus: "ELIZABETH MEUX is going to be married to
NATHANEL BACON and it seems to be necessary that you should know that she is
above the age of twenty one years. I certify that she is as she has lived in my brother's and
my family ever since the death of her parents, after which my father, JOHN HAWKINS,
was appointed guardian, who being dead, I have since acted as such myself, and I do give
my consent to the above intedned marriage.


The above ELIZABETH MEUX was the daughter of AGNES HAWKINS and THOMAS
MEUX, s/o Richard & Elizabeth (Lightfoot) Meux (she was d/o Sherwood Lightfoot of
Hanover Co. VA)
MARTIN HAWKINS was the noted Stureon rider.
On record at the Henrico Courthouse p. 336 is the following "On motion of James Royal
he is appointed guardian for Sarah Bacon and Langston Bacon children of John Langston
Bacon--Elizabeth Bacon chose as her guardian Allen Williamson. Edmund Bacon was
guardian for Lydall Bacon.
Allen Williamson was Elizabeth Bacon's bro-i-l, having mar. sis. Lucy Bacon.
Edmund Bacon was uncle of Lydall Bacon.
Sarah Bacon Bowles guardian was James Royal, whose first wife was Sally Bacon a
probable sis. of Sarah, Elizabeth and Edmund.??
James Royal had a son, John Bacon Royal, who mar. 15 Oct 1795 to Mary Smith, dau. of
Betsy Powall Burton and Cap. Obadiah Smith. They were mar. 4 Mar 1773. Mary Smith
Royall or Ryall, sister Elizabeth Smith mar. Lydall Bacon Bowles.
James Royall md 2nd Lucy Brittain, dau. of James Brittain who will, dated 4 Dec 1790,
mentions his daughter, Lucy Royall, wife of James Royal.

Second sister of JOHN HAWKINS, the immigrant, married Anthony Waddy of Louisa
Co. VA and is the ancestor of Woodson Waddy.

Third sister of JOHN HAWKINS, the immigrant, was ELIZABETH HAWKINS, mar.
ELIJAH MORTON, son of Wm. Morton and wife Ann Northershed of Orange Co. VA.
The descendants of JOHN HAWKINS and his sisters are scattered through several states,
but chiefly KY.

Children of JOHN and MARY (LANGFORD) HAWKINS are:

1. MARTIN HAWKINS b. 1747 md. Mary THOMPSON, they moved to KY and
settled at the mouth of Kentucky River now know as Carrolton.
2. JAMES HAWKINS b. 1750 md. Miss OVERTON of Hanover Co. He also moved
from VA to KY and settled in Logan Co. KY
3. JOHN HAWKINS, JR. md. a d/o Cosby Duke of Hanover Co. VA
4. EDMUND HAWKINS b. 1754 md___ and had among others JOSEPH and
5. JANE HAWKINS b. 1757
9. JOSEPH HAWKINS b. 1765 md Anne Parker ROBINSON, d/o Benjamin
ROBINSON, gd/o William Robinson and Agnes Smith of (or)
Beverley. and ggd/o John Robinson who was Speaker of House of Burgesses.
Joseph Hawkins and his second wife Nancy J. Waller had among other issue John or
Joseph Herndon Hawkins b. 17 Apr 1813 he md. Miss Perrin.
James Russel Hawkins s/o of Joseph and 1st wife Ann wife was
Sarah Adeline Bowles md 10 Mar 1825 who was a descendant of
Agnes Hawkins and Thos. Meux mentioned above.

Most of the information in this article was compiled by DR. JAMES RUSSELL
HAWKINS who was born in Spottsylvania Co. VA 1805 and died in Franfort KY in
1897. He moved to Henrico Co. Va and lived at Yellow Tavern.


Philemon Hawkins 1690-1725 from England 1714, settled in Charles City Co. VA md
Anne Eleanor Howard.

Col. Philemon Hawkins of Gloucester Co. VA (1717-1801) moved to Butte Co. NC in
1737; High Sheriff Granville Co. 1757; Rep. Bute & Granville Co's in NC General
Assembly for 13 years; Chief aide to Gov. Tryon; Served in Carolina troops at Battle of
Alamac; Fought against regulators 1771; member of Congress. Raised first volunteers of
American Rev. Made Col. 1776 md Delia Martin; Col Philemon (1752-1833) member of
Provencial Congress; md. 1775 Lucy Davis (1759-1807).
