This is a real tough one. Near the end of his life, Charles Henry H
reported in the 1880 US Census that he was born in LA Jun 17 1827. Others
in the family continue to believe he was born in NY. The first record I
found of CHH is his marriage to Sarah Hall in Missouri in 1848. Everything
in-between is a mystery. The family included pictures of his parents and
his grandparents in an Arkansas historical society write up called Real Live
Rebel. Thus, we have their pictures but only an iffy half memory passed
down three generations that his father's name was John and his mother was
Native Am or 1/2 Native Am.
I've been chasing this mystery almost 3 years, but I'm not giving up anytime
soon. I knew nothing about Hawthorne side of my family other than my
father's name & birth state when I started researching. Having found so
much, including some very distant cousins, though sadly no one who ever knew
my father (d. 1997), after starting with next to nothing, I remain
enthusiastic.

Ann,
There was a John Hawthorn in Fairfield South Carolina in 1820 along with
Adam Hawthorn. These two are mentioned as being elders in "The Old Brick
Church". John Hawthorn is mentioned again with John Pearson. ..
There is a John Hawthorn born 1787 died 1856 buried in a cemetery in
Claiborne Parish Louisiana with a Mary Davidson.
There was also a Charles Hathorn that no one seems to know anything about.
His record was found in a book titled "A collection of Upper South Carolina
Genealogical and Family Records", Vol. II, page 95. Will of Andrew Gillebeau
of Abbeville, S.C. witnessed by Charles Hathorn. Date of will was February
18, 1806.
What county in Louisiana did your Charles Henry Hawthorn live?
If you need more information please email me at . Linda
