I ended up adding the info to my own database, because something a
relative sent me years ago (yes, I believe it was from LDS) also
seemed to match what Edward has on his page. (I could be wrong on
that, I was up until 4:00 one morning working on this). I looked
through the sources I have, and found this in a copy I made from a
trip to Philadelphia a couple of years ago. It's from Vol. V of
Colonial Families of the United States, Mackenzie, ed., 1966.
"John Hayden d. in 1682 in Braintree, Mass. With a younger brother,
William Hayden, came to America in the ship Mary & John..." (p.275).
Also, (p.204): "They came from the borders of Somersetshire and
Devonshire. As the eldest son, by the law of primogeniture, could
inherit ancestral lands in England...but the Arms held in the line
of John Hayden, nearly three hundred years ago, clearly indicate
descent from the Hayden family of Norfolkshire, A.D. 1221..."
It doesn't mention names further back. The first time I heard of
Gideon was from a book by Marjorie Waterfield from Ohio.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. ;)
