Fellow Rooters, forgive me if this does not interest you. Some of you might
wish to forward this on to eastern states' roots groups, particularly New
York.

Survivors, friends and family of more than 150,000 children who rode trains
between 1854 and 1929 toward an uncertain future in mid-America will gather
in Springdale, Ark., Oct. 1-4 during the annual Meeting of the Orphan Train
Heritage Society of America, Inc. (OTHSA).

This will mark the 10th anniversary of OTHSA, which was founded to make sure
the stories of these children are not forgotten, as an information clearing
house, and to provide survivors a place to share their history. All of the
orphan train survivors are 70 ears old and older, and there may be about 300
still living.

Many were off-spring of immigrants who arrived at the Port of New York. If
the families came upon hard times because of death, illness or poverty, there
were no extended families to care for the children. People brought their
children to institutions, while others were simply abandoned before being
brought to an institution by neighbors or police.

As the problem of what to do with all the children mounted, a minister named
Charles Loring Brace and some of his friends founded the Children's Aid
Society (CAS) in 1853. The New York Foundling Asylum (later changed to
Hospital) was founded in 1868 by a Roman Catholic nun, Sister Teresa Vincent,
along with a few novice Sisters of Charity to care for infants and children.

Believing they could help the children, both organizations began the practice
of "free-home-placing-out." CAS used a contract, while the foundling hospital
actually indentured the children.

Clutching Bibles, and accompanied by a designated agent, the children, about
30 to a group, were sent out by train to towns across the Midwest. Some
started their journeys with brothers or sisters. Often, the siblings were
separated, going to homes in different towns.

Local committees approved the homes into which children were placed, so
placement depended on local attitudes and ethics. The practice ended in 1929
with the enactment of national child welfare laws.

Debbie -- I'm curious about how you constructed your lists of names. Did you
have to do it yourself, or did you generate them as a report through Family
Origins or another piece of software?

Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII

Hi Sandy,
Sure enjoyed your anecdotes of Elizabeth and William J. SMITH. I've made a
copy for my permanent SMITH file. Listed below is what I have on your
family so far. Do you know where William J. & Elizabeth were born?
Where James Walker died? Name/vital data on James' wife?

Louis Henry SMITH (1784-?) & Susannah (PETERSON) (1791-3/1870 Lewis Co., WV)
William J. SMITH (1809-2/1862 Webster Co., WV) & Elizabeth (MCNEMAR)
(1815-5/1910 Wood Co., WV);
James Walker SMITH (8/1847 Randolph Co., WV-7/1844 County?) & Unknown?;
Georgia (SMITH) HAMNER.
Virginia (HAMNER) MICK.
Sandi (MICK) CHAMBERS.

Thanks.

Debbie --

Do you know anything else about your #269. Mary WAMSLEY? I have an early
Mary Wamsley (b ca 1725? prob. in England or Anne Arundel Co., MD) d/o John
and Abigail SMITH Wamsley. I have no husband for her; her bro. John seems to
have been the first of these Wamsleys to come to VA.

go ahead and do it.......
i love to see other people's work.
it makes me feel
like i'm not alone
in this quest to preserve our families heritage.
i would be very happy
and more than willing to place my hard work
and others on the web.
i am proud of my sons work and mine too.
i also would have a way
to thank the many people publicly
who have helped me too.

i think it's a great idea
to spread our wings a little,
and show everyone in the whole wide world
how diverse our choices of partners
have been over the past three or four centries.

when it comes to love, i lucked out
my wife is second generation italian.
and boy do i love her
