Dear Dominikus,

What a nice offer!

At 84, I am slowing down on big travel, but perhaps you could give us clues
of where in Germany our emigrating ancestors might be from.

I connect to that first one on the material we have been receiving, Johann
Peter Hickman, who came in September 1734 on the ship Judith.

Sarah Hickman, daughter of Jacob Hickman, married my great great
grandfather, Samuel Kingery in Virginia. They moved to Indiana ca 1806.
Their son Christian Kingery, married his first cousin once removed, Sarah
Witter Kingery. They moved first up to Carroll Co, IN, then, rather late in
his life, to Labette Co, Kansas.

This whole clan, including Meyer/Moyers, were Dunkers, I.e. Church of the
Brethren.
Many of them were Swiss Anabaptists, who fled Switzerland because they were
being severely persecuted there.

Many settled in the Rhine Pfalz known in this country as the Palatinate,
from whence they emigrated following the so-called Peasants' War They
meet the Anabaptists description, but may have come here as Mennonites (my
Kingery clan did.)

I have, I think somewhere posted, the following before:

Johann Peter was born in Germany, listed in Strassburger and Hinke as
arriving PA, 15 Sep 1748, Ship Judith from Rotterdam, out of Cowes, England.
The Brethren Encyclopedia adds that Johann Peter "became associated with the
Brethren settlement along the Little Swatara River in Tulpehocken Township,
Berks Co, PA.......In 1770 he was preaching for the Little Swatara
congregation although not yet ordained.
By 1754, he is found on the tax rolls of Tulpehocken Township.
One source says he died 1764 in Macungie Township, Northampton, PA. but does
not make clear whether this comes from Heckman Genealogy Clearinghouse, or
World family Tree, "Families of Dark County" . (Source: The John Heckman
Family of Virginia, by Elaine McKillip, 50 Iceberg Ln, Rocky Mount, VA
24151, May 25 1998).
>From another source-- [ From: Doris D. Lessig * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] --

Leonard:>
Oh, THAT Jacob! I have information from his will, and also know that his
father was Peter Heckman who arrived in 1748, and settled in Tulpehocken
Township, Berks County, PA where he died and was buried in 177-

Jacob was in the Revolution (still in Berks/Lancaster Counties), after which
he moved to Franklin County VA. He married Barbara Meyer of Lancaster
County, but we don't know when (after 1767 for sure as he was listed as
Single in 1767 tax list. They had many children.

Send me a note at my aol address -- and we can
continue this subject.

MY add: Quite likely that they moved to VA to escape the need to serve in
the militia as they were ardent pacifists. They also refused to take oaths
of allegiance to a state, a country or a flag. They interpreted the 10
Commandants quite litterly.

The Church of the Brethren Encyclopedia adds some more detail.

The Brethren Encyclopedia repeats this information and goes on to say:

He became associated with the Brethren settlement along the
Little Swatara River in Tulpehocken Township, Berks Co, PA.....In 1770,
he was preaching for the Little Swatara congregation although not yet
ordained. His descendants migrated to Virginia,
Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, California and other states. Among
them may be found several generations of ministers,
missionaries, professors, writers, and other active church workers.
>>
By 1754, Peter is found on the tax lists of Tupelhocken Township. He
signed his will on 22 Dec 1774. His estate was inventoried on 8 Feb 1775.
It was presented in Reading by sons John Jacob Heckman and Diederick
Heckman on 19 Feb. This estate doubtless gave Jacob the funds to move to
Virginia and buy land there, since he is said to have gone there in the
mid 1770's.
>>
Peter and his wife Elisabetha Margaretha, had at least eleven children as
named in Peter's will. Early church records show baptisms for Anna Maria
on 28 Apr 1751 and Elisabetha Margaretha on 1 Apr 1753, and John Peter
born 13 Sep 1754. Doris Lessig's notes suggest the three eldest children,
sons, were probably born in Germany, including John Jacob, Dieterich and
Andreas (Andrew). Their other children listed in the will in addition to
the six named above, were Rebecca, Hannah, John, Salome, and Joseph. The
will was witnessed by Christian Newcummer and Wendel Seibert. From
Lessig's notes there is no indication that any of this generation other
than our Jacob left Pennsylvania.

Dear overseas cousins,
best Greetings from Germany!

I am happy to see the Heckmann-forum so active.

Hi All,

Here is the link to D.R. Heckman's book online; you may download it for free

from the BYU Family History archives:
http://contentdm.lib.byu.edu/cdm4/document.php?CISOROOT=/FH8&CISOPTR=53353&R
EC=1

Click on the plus sign next to "Heckman", and then click on the last entry
"Printing Version 6 MB". It will take a while to load; you can then save it

to your hard drive by clicking on the diskette icon.

I have been waiting to begin the HECKMAN family history stuff until I could
post some picture online. It is more complicated than I thought, so I may
proceed without it....

Thanks,
Jeff Heckman
