Connie,
Here are 2 web-sites you may wish to explore, concerning the possible UK
origins of HEDGES families, particularly some of the more famous ones such as
the Sir Charles HEDGES of London/Oxford & Sir William HEDGES the Governor of
Bengal & later the Director of the Bank of England in 1694 (the year it was
founded):
1. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/4666/ This is the very readable
home site of Dennis HEDGES, with lots of data and stories of the early HEDGES
settlers in USA, plus a few articles about possible connections with early
English HEDGES, including mention of both Knights above; for your particular
interests I would suggest clicking on HEDGES History & Stories, then The Name
& Family of HEDGES (uses a lot of the same data as the next reference, no. 2,
but easier to understand); then have a look at other articles such as The
History of the HEDGES Family (I like its' starting point "Charles the 1st was
a greedy & selfish King"; The HEDGES, by Mollie HEDGES is also worth reading;
as is the article by Decator H RODGERS, who mentions the search for the
unproven link btween Joseph of Monocacy & Sir Charles HEDGES of Oxford;
2. http://sidereal-designs.com/gen This is Ernie Kent's web-site: he is
descended from the LACY-alias-HEDGES; click on alderton84gif for the 1st page
of the descendants of John LACY-alias-HEDGES (Will proved in Archdeaconry
Court of Berks, England in 1594); John was supposedly "of Cornwall" but this
is probably an error in these early documents, as Ernie has been unable to
find any earlier Cornish links (but by that time John was well established
with other LACY-als-HEDGES in Stratton St. Margaret/Bourton/Shrivenham, all
just outside Swindon); if you patiently scroll through these charts you come
to Sir William HEDGES & his impressive list of accomplishments, on
alderton85gif; another word of warning from Ernie about this often-quoted
Alderton document- he believes the politically-prominent line in Wanborough
is not descended from John, although the political line from John's son
William is correct.
Unfortunately, I have not come across references to Queen Anne, but the
alderton charts show a Royal functionary connection with John HEDGES, son of
the above Sir William HEDGES & Anne NICOLL (his 1st wife): this John, Born
1688, Died 1737, was MP for Fowey, Cornwall & Treasurer to the PRINCE OF
WALES.
Hope this is of interest.
