My Grandfather moved to Texas prior to 1917, He was Thomas Edgar Helms,
named a son John Martel born around 1923 but drowned at age 6, I am only
attempting to start my roots search, I cannot find anything on Thomas Edgar
Helms, married Ada Pearle Dobbs in KY or TN I think, but there is another
Helms married to Ada Dobbs buried here in Oklahoma. My Grandfather worked on
the railroad, had 6 sons My father Cecil Benson was the 3rd or 4th born.
Other names were Otis,Leonard, Floyd, Ray,
then Martel. Any help to get started would be great. Thanks Cecil Fern

This I've previously posted, but it's been a long time:
Sampson Dawster (Doster?) HELMS, was born 1824, Mecklenburg County, NC.
Moved to Georgia with parents (unknown) in 1836.
Married 1846 Missouri Caroline Parker Muscogee County, GA.
Moved to Texas 1866-67 in wagon train with his father-in-law, Cader Parker.
Settled in Bowie County, TX where he and Missouri are buried at Center Ridge
Cemetery, Maud, TX.

No confirmed connection has been established to the other Mecklenburg
(Union) County Helms families.
There are a couple of theories, thanks to correspondence with Gerald Helms
and others.
One would involve some link with Sampson DOSTER who was in Mecklenburg
County at the time.
Sampson DOSTER did have a daughter, Polly DOSTER, who married a HELMS, Isaac
This Isaac HELMS had a brother, Charles HELMS, who is a possible father of
Another possibility for the father of S. D. HELMS is Allen Helms md. Anna
That's where it stands. Gene Helms in Dallas.
