It fills my heart with joy that someone still takes the time and trouble to
attempt to authenticate published research and so despite the fact that I
published both "offending" items that John Blake has referenced, I am not
unhappy.
The two items that John reference are :
Hemingway and variants 9903 (dated 22 June 1999)
Hemingway and variants Spring 2004 (dated May 2004)
As a bit of background, the article in the Journal 9903 was a transcript of
"The Hemingway Masons and Contractors from Dewsbury and their Associates" by
GY Hemingway. In the article written by Guy Yeomans Hemingway he describes
his research into the lines of the three railway builder brothers, John,
James and Joseph Benjamin Hemingway.
The article in the Journal Spring 2004 was one written by me into the family
of Maud Hemingway.
What John hasn't referenced here is in Hemingway and variants 9904 (dated
circa November 1999) is the letter by Cecily Sterry which describes her
understanding of the ancestry which is the same as that published in 2004.
I would like to go back to first principles and check this out, but right
now is not a good time! What I would say at the moment is that I still
believe that the Spring 2004 version supporting Maud Hemingway article and
the chart displayed at the Hemingway Gathering in 2002 is probably accurate.
However....
In both referenced publications I gave strong warnings. In the 9903 Journal
when introducing the transcript of GY Hemingway's work I said, "My only
caution to readers is that they should remember that just because something
is in print, it doesn't mean that it is factual, so use with care." I also
went on to say at the end of the piece, "One caveat, as usual you are
recommended to check primary sources and most especially if you are using
material from this article..."
Now those two warnings were not particularly helpful other than as
reminders, but at the end of the article about Maud Hemingway in Spring
2004, I more helpfully stated, "As a reminder, the ancestor line for this
part of the family including Maud Mary is shown here. This is considered to
be fairly robustly researched as far as the marriage Richard Hemingway and
Ann Acrode, but becomes more speculative the earlier the generations".
So far from being defensive about the anomalies that John has quoted, I
would welcome views based upon solid primary research that may support or
refute what we currently have. Whilst I talk about "...fairly robustly
researched..." this is from Parish Records and Wills and makes judgemental
decisions where hard facts that firmly describe ancestor links are missing.
Will we ever know for certain? I doubt it, but with the results of DNA
research, we may be more confident. The trouble at the moment is that we do
not have enough participants from the various lines.
John has reopened an interesting, if potentially very time consuming area
that I very much hope someone will try to investigate. Me, I'm going back
to first principles with my own line in the New Year to check the robustness
of what I have currently got and remind me of the detail. You will know
that it is several years since I looked at my own tree and now's my chance.
Best wishes.

Whilst reviewing my data during the rescent investigation into Thomas Auty
and George's line it seemed I had found something not quite right with my
Hemingway line
I found two Richard Hemingway & Annis Gye with different liniages
one based on the chart displayed at the 2002 gathering and in journal Spring
2004 it goes in reverse sequence:
Richard Hemingway & Annis GYE
Richard (1538) father Thomas Hemyngway
Thomas (1486-1579) father Robert Hemyngway
Robert (1460-1536) father Robert Hemyngway
Robert(1440) father Henry Hemyngway (1410)
the other based on a tree in the 99/03 Journal goes:
Richard Hemyngway & Ann GUY
Richard's parents Richard Hemyngway & Margaret Deane
Richard ( - 1537) father Richard Hemyngway
Richard (1450) father Henry Hemyngway (1410)
Also I appear to have two John Hemingway & Martha Hargreaves, also based on
the same sources however one of the John's is born 1641 the other 1629
