Variations [odmiany] of Polish coats of arms exist for many reasons, of
which error and confusion must lead the list. It is very rare for records
of the origin of a variation to survive, and though stories providing
rationales sometimes have come down to us, these are almost always entirely
legendary. There is no system to it.
