There are certainly cases in which branches of the same family are known to
have used different coats of arms; but, in general, homonymous families
bearing different arms should be assumed, absent evidence to the contrary,
to be different families.
Kasprzycki lists thirteen apparently different armigerous Kalinowski
families [VI:242-3]:
KALINOWSKI
(1) counts of Austria in 1818.
Arms Kalinowa, recorded circa 1450, from Kalinowo in Silesia. A Silesian
family which signed itself "from Kalinow" settled in the Ukraine and Red
Russia. A bramch legitimated itself in the Congress Kingdom in 1836.

(8) Arms Topo'r, a member of which family confirmed nobility in 1850; from
Volhynia.

(9) Arms Tro'jstrzal/, 1845; from Kaunas and Volhynia.

Arms Zare~ba, 1330; from Kalinowa in the district of Kalisz, Silesia, and
Prussia.

(11) Arms unknown, ennobled 1790; a colonel in the Polish Army.

(12) a branch of Kalino'w
Arms unknown; 1630; from Lithuania; an Islamic Tartar family.

(13) Konstanty Kalinowski
Arms unknown, executed 1864 in Vilnius, leader of the January Insurrection.
