Hello to other Hewitt researchers
I am writing on behalf of the Hewitt family. I have seen recent postings to this list trying to direct researchers to a book written by my cousin Norma Tompkins. She is elderly and is no longer active in research. I have communicated with her for some years. She explained to me several years ago the basis of the information she included in her book on the Hewitt family in which she stated that James Hewitt married Elizabeth Allen. She said this was based on the following reasoning:
1. James and Elizabeth Hewitt had a son whose first name was Allen and another son whose first name was Caleb
2. Since the family came from Spartanburg Co, SC she found a will circa 1822 of a John Allen who had an unmarried daughter named Elizabeth as well as a son named Caleb.
3. Norma's assumption was made that this John Allen family with a daughter named Elizabeth Allen must be connected to James Hewitt, since his wife's first name was Elizabeth and names of his sons included the given names Caleb and Allen. No other Hewitt relative purported that James Hewitt was connected to the Allen family in any way, or supported any tradition of James Hewitt's wife being an Allen.
I have statements from several descendants of Caleb Hewitt, son of James Hewitt and Elizabeth Osheal, which confirm this. I have seen no evidence of James Hewitt marrying anyone other than Elizabeth Osheal, daughter of Jethro Osheal aka Jethro Oshields.
I am a direct descendant of James Hewitt and his wife Elizabeth Osheal, daughter of Jethro Osheal. I have researched this line for many years and I can state with authority that James Hewitt did not marry Elizabeth Allen, but married Elizabeth Osheal.
I have access to papers which my cousin did not have access to, which include various public documents (above and beyond the bounty land papers of James Hewitt for his service in the War of 1812), and private papers showing that the wife of James Hewitt was Elizabeth Osheal, daughter of Jethro Osheal.
