NC035.TXT GENEALOGICAL INFORMATION ON THE FAMILY &
DESCENDANTS OF A THOMAS HILL OF RANDOLPH COUNTY,
NC, WHO'S DESCENDANTS MOVED TO INDIANA..

Entered in February of 1988 and updated in August of 1990
by Robert R. Hill of Brandon, Fla.

Source: Data by William Collier Hill Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia
and other sources from Mormon Church.

The first information on Thomas Hill 1/ was a land grant for
243 acres on February 10th 1763. The land was in Tract 10 of
Earl of Granville's land and the agent was Henry Eustace
McCullough. At that time the land was in Rowan County, N.C.
but by 1771 Guilford County had been formed and was located
in the new county.

In 1773 Thomas Hill's 1/ land was still in Guilford County.
He was among the petitioners asking to have the court house
moved nearer to the center of the county (Vol V. No. 1, 1981
of Genealogical Journal of Randolph County, N.C.).

In 1779 Randolph County was formed and the land was again in
a new county, located in the northwest corner of Randolph
County, N.C.

Thomas Hill 1/ was a Regulator (a Regulator was a person who
complained of injustice, extortion, corrupt courts, compelled
to pay taxes to British Agents etc. They banded together to
bring order to the community but they refused to pay the
taxes between 1764 and 1771. In 1771 Governor Tryon marched
against them and defeated them and at least three hundred
people died. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War the
Regulators supported the cause of the British and were
defeated by Colonel Caswell in February of 1776.

In 1779, Thomas Hill 1/ proved himself a patriot by taking
the Oath of Allegiance to the Provincial Congress. In the
1779 Randolph County Tax List, (Page 183) Thomas Hill 1/
returned an inventory of his taxable property in William
Millikian's tax list.

In the 1779 and 1785 Tax List of Randolph County, Thomas Hill
1/ had 143 acres instead of the original 243 acres. On
February 20th, 1768, Thomas Hill 1/ & wife Elizabeth had sold
100 acres to Stephen Alexander. Samuel Lowe listed the
taxables in Captain Clark's and Captain Gray's District. In
this list, Thomas Hill 1/ and Thomas Lowe are adjoining
lines. Samuel Millikan witnessed Thomas Hill's 1/ will in
1798.

Thomas Hill 1/ made his will on 7th March 1798 (Will Book B,
Page 112, N.C. State Archives, Raleigh, N.C.). The will was
proved in the November Court Session of 1800, Randolph County
Court Term, showing that Thomas Hill 1/ had died sometime
between 7th March 1798 and November 1800. The location of his
birth and date of birth is unknown. Apparently his wife had
died before him as no wife is names in his will but his
children named were:
Margaret Hill 2/
Richard Hill 2/
John Hill 2/
Francis Hill 2/
William Hill 2/
Mary Hill 2/
Daidi Hill 2/.

Thomas Hill 1/ called Winifred his daughter but she was not
named as one of his children so she may have been a daughter
in law.

He named his sons John & William the executors of the estate.
He gave the plantation on which he lived to the son John
Hill. The remainder of the land was given to the son William
Hill. The other children shared equally in what was left of
the estate.

JOHN HILL 2/, SON OF THOMAS HILL 1/.

John Hill 2/ was born ca. 1765-1767 in what was then Rowan
County, N.C. He married Rachel Sargent but the date of
marriage is unknown.

They had nine children according to the biography of a son,
Doctor Hill 3/, in the History of Crawford & Clark Counties
Illinois, by Perrier, 1883, pages 276 and 277. Those children
were:
1. Charles Hill 3/.
2. Jane Hill 3/.
3. Rachel Hill 3/.
4. John A. Hill 3/.
5. Doctor Hill 3/.
6. Malinda Hill 3/
7. Richard Hill 3/.
8. William Hill 3/.
9. Elizabeth Hill 3/.

John Hill 2/ purchased 495 acres of land in 1804 from Henry
Youst. He bought another 22 acres from him and was granted 10
acres from the State of N.C. which totaled 527 acres on the
Uhwarrie River which in 1815 he paid taxes in Smith's
District.

Charles Hill 3/, son of John 2/ paid taxes on 323 acres on
Caraway River in Smith's District. John Hill's 2/ brother
(William Hill 3/) paid taxes on 243 acres on the Caraway
River. Thomas Hill 2/ had 135 acres on Caraway River on
which he paid taxes.

John Hill 2/ had inherited his father's plantation of 143
acres and apparently sold it to his brother William Hill 2/.
The state sold William Hill 2/ 100 acres bringing it back to
a total of 243 acres, which is the number of acres originally
owned by his father, Thomas Hill 1/.

In 1816, John Hill and his wife Rachel Sargent and their
children moved to Sullivan County, Indiana, near Farmersburg.

Two of their sons, Charles Hill 3/ & Doctor Hill 3/ married
Boyd Sisters, Hannah & Nancy Boyd in Randolph County. They
were the daughters of James Boyd of Guilford County, N.C..
Charles Hill 3/ married Hannah and Doctor Hill 3/ married
Nancy Boyd.

John Hill 2/ was in the Militia in 1788 under Captain York.
