INFORMATION ON ABEL HILL
These notes are from the book, Hill and Hill-Mobley Connections of
Fairfield County, South Carolina, by George A. Hill
ASAPH HILL OF FAIRFIELD DISTRICT, SOUTH CAROLINA .
Asaph Hill received a land grant; Book 24Q, page 113, Camden Dist., S.
C. August 20, 1788. "Unto Asaph Hill 114 acres 20 Aug., 1788, District of
Camden on Beaver Creek." Andrew McDowell D. S. The grant adjoined the land
of George Powell, George Miller, Elijah Beams, Darkus Hill, John Carr and
David Hopkins. Asaph Hill was born as early as 1767 since he received
a land grant in 1788 (required to be 21 years of age) located near that of
Dorcas Hill on Beaver Creek. As mentioned, he bought land from Dorcas in
1793. He was one of the Administrators to the estate of Wm. Hill Jr. in 1795
along with Abel Hill and Thomas Mobley.
He was shown in the 1790 census of Fairfield Co. as follows:
Asaph Hill, 1 male over 16 years of age."
The 1800 census of Fairfield, page 384-385: "Asaph Hill, 1male 26-45 years;
1 female under 10 years age; 1 female 26-45 years of age."
Fairfield County, Deed Book 1, page 221-: "I Asaph Hill for $300.00
sell unto Samuel and Elijah Hill
98 acres of land on Beaver Creek, a branch of Broad River bounded N.E. by
Darcus Hill's land." /signed/ Asaph Hill.- Date of Instrument 1804, recorded
1806. Samuel and Elijah were sons of Wm. Hill Jr. Mrs. C. G. Young wrote:
"Asaph Hill had bought the above land from Joseph Hill who in turn had
bought it from Darcus Hill." We have not been successful in verifying the
transaction with Joseph.

WILLIAM HILL Senior, Born ? , Died 1790, Fairfield District South
Carolina. The first reference to William Hill is shown in the Lunenburg Co.,
Virginia Tithe list where he was listed with Richard Hill in 1750. One
"Jno. Hill" was listed in that precinct which was large and sparsely
settled. William was not shown in 1752, nor was "Jno Hill". Richard Hill
was listed with one tithe (himself).
William, by this time, had removed from the locality. His son and
heir, William Hill Jr. received a land grant in 1772 indicating that he was
21 years of age and born circa 1751, or earlier. There is nothing to
indicate the name of the wife of William Hill Senior. She died prior to
1790 as she was not mentioned in his will dated 1790 in Fairfield County,
S. C.
William Hill Sr. received land grants in the 1760's and those are
the first records of his presence there. There were several grants to
various William Hills' in the Fairfield section of old Craven County. They
were to: Wm. Hill Sr., d. 1790; to his son Wm. Hill Junior..; To. Wm. Hill
Sr. D. 1804 of Chester Co., S. C.; to Wm. Hill who had sons Richard and
Mabry Hill. Some of the dates shown for the grants differ and the
explanation is given in the footnote* below.

*The South Carolina archives Department states: "The usual
amount of land given to European Protestants by the province Was
a hundred acres for the head of the family and an additional 50
for each member of this household, not necessarily children.
Indentured servants were included. Land granted by the province
was done upon application. The Petition for land bears the
earliest date. The plat of the survey made by the Deputy Surveyor
usually bears the date of a month or two later. This plat was
used in describing the land on the grant which carried a still
later date. The period from the date of petition to the actual
recording of the grant was usually several months. F.M.H.

William Hill Jr,, son of Wm. Hill Senior, was born before 1750, and
died circa 1795 in Fairfield District, South Carolina. The Mobley book by
Dixon shows that William Hill married Dorcas Moberley, a daughter of William
Moberley, Sr. and Ann Osborne. Dorcas Mobley Hill and her Husband William
Hill Junior both
died circa 1795.
The census records "Heads of S. C. Families, Camden District

William Hill Jr., as the heir of the estate of his father, received
all his lands and other property. The following deeds show the disposition
of these parcels of land from the grants of the two Williams.

The above land grants and deeds listed show that William Hill Jr. sold
the land that was granted to Wm. Hill senior. In a deed shown in the Richard
Hill Sr. section, page 19, Wm. Hill Senior is said to have been heir "To the
landed estate" of Richard Hill. Wm. Hill Jr. sold out the land that was
granted to himself and to his father and moved to the Beaver Creek
neighborhood and from Bowers Mill creek vicinity a short distance away, and
to the land granted to Richard Hill. This land was inherited by Wm. Sr., and
given by Will to his son, Wm. Hill Jr.
Dorcas and William Hill sold land in 1793 as shown by the deed dated
6th of February, to Richard Hill. Then in 1795 the following deed was made.
Deed Book R. page 158 Fairfield deeds March 13, 1795 "I Wm. Hill of County
of Fairfield sell for 50 pounds sterling, unto George Dye, 80 acres, joining
Thomas Edrington, Richard Hill and John Dye." /signed/ Wm. X Hill

William Hill Junior and his wife, Dorcas Moberly Hill, died circa
1795. From a letter to Mrs. J. E. Hill, Winder, Georgia, from Mrs. A. C.
Voyles of Enloe, Texas, Oct. 4, 1931. "Mary Hill Housh born near Aberdeen
Parish, S. C. Her parents died when she was two months old and she was
reared by her Aunt and Uncle, Thomas and Naomi Meadows." The daughter of
William and Dorcas Hill, Mary Hill, married Mathew Hosch (see the Hosch
section, page 141) and she was born circa 1793 (census records). We know
that her parents were living in that year and perhaps as late as 1795. Mary
Hill had Abel Hill as her guardian, then for several years, Richard Hill.
These
1. Abel Hill, son of Wm. Hill Junior and Dorcas Moberly was born circa
1774. One Abel Hill was an
administrator for the Estate of Wm. Hill Jr. in 1795. It is
not clear whether this was an older
Abel Hill who received the 1762 land grant shown below. From the census
record and the ages given,
Probable that it was the younger man. The elder Abel was not listed
in the 1790 census. (He could have
been living with another Hill and not listed as the head of the household.)
The 1800 census - Vol. #4, page
399 shows:
ABEL HILL - 1 male 10-16 years of age
1 male 16-26 years of age
1 female 25-45 years of age.
He was born no earlier than 1774 and was of age in 1795. The male
10-16 years of age may have been
one of his younger brothers, an orphan of Wm. Hill. One of the
last records we have of Abel is a deed,
Book P. page 264, recorded 1805, to John Mertz, a release. The elder Abel
Hill received land grants as
follows: (South Carolina Historical Commission) "Abel Hill, two surveys of
100 acres each, dated 17th
December, 1762 and 15th of December, 1772, respectively...situated on a line
between Fairfield and
Chester counties.." We have been unable to confirm the location of these
grants. Further mention of the
1772 grant: Book 15, page 440 Craven Co. Unto Abel Hill - December 1?,
1772, 100 acres in Craven on
Branch of Turkey Creek S.E. on George Rutlege's, West on Robt. Cowens.
(There was a Turkey Creek in
Chester Co., S. C.)
2. RICHARD HILL - son of Wm. Hill Jr. and Dorcas, was born circa 1775-6.
(census records) He was of
age shortly after the settlement of the Estate of his father was commenced.
There were several Richards' in
the Beaver Creek and northwest Fairfield area; this has complicated the
tracing of the ancestry of these
people. But the records indicate that Richard Hill "Junior" was the son of
the above William and died October 27, 1837 in Fairfield County. He married
Dorcas (?), granddaughter of Henry and Mary
Funderburgh.
3. Samuel Hill - son of William Hill Junior and Dorcas Moberly. Little
record is found of Samuel. It is not
clear whether he moved west or remained in Fairfield and died there. Nancy
Hill, the daughter of John Hill d. 1810) may have married a Samuel Hill.
(page 7) Thomas Meador was the Guardian of Samuel Hill.
4. ELIJAH HILL - son of Wm. and Dorcas Hill. He was a minor in 1795 and a
ward of Thomas Meador
in 1798. Samuel and Elijah Hill purchased a tract of land, 98 acres, from
Asaph Hill. "deed Book Q page 21 - 'I Asaph Hill for $300.00 sell unto
Samuel and Elijah Hill 98 acres on Beaver Creek, a branch of Broad River,
Sounded N.E. by Darcus Hill. Signed Asaph Hill. No date of Instrument.
Recorded 1806. Witnessed by: Richard Hill. They do not appear further in
the Fairfield records available to the Compiler. One Elijah Hill was shown
in the 1815 tax list in what is now Madison County, Alabama, then
Mississippi Territory. (p.3)
5. ELIZABETH HILL - daughter of Wm. and Dorcas Hill, married John Alsup or
Alsop. His ancestry is
unknown. (A short sketch on Alsop page 23. It is stated in the letter from
Mrs. A.C. Voyles previously
mentioned that "Betsy" (Elizabeth) married a man named Foster & moved to
Tennessee. n We have been
unable to verify this statement. No further record is found of this couple.
6. JOHN HILL - son of Wm. and Dorcas Hill was a minor at the time of the
decease of his parents. His
guardian was Abel Hill. Then in the Final Settlement of the estate, John
Foote is shown as his Guardian.
After John become of age, he removed to Mississippi Territory. Deed Book
W., page 356, August 11,
1814, Fairfield Co., S. C. "Know all men by these presents that I John Hill
of Mississippi Territory for
$535.00 to me in hand paid by Francis Edrington Jr. of Fairfield County, S.
C. sold 77 acres on Beaver
Creek it being a part of Real Estate of William Hill, late of Fairfield,
deceased, being part of Real Estate
laid out for said John Hill by order of Court of Common Pleas as one of the
heirs of Said William Hill."
/signed/ John Hill.
Witnessed by: William P. Hill, Matthew Hosch and D. R. Coleman.
John Hill may have removed to Madison Alabama. (page 3)
7. MARY HILL - daughter of William and Mary Hill, was born circa 1793. She
had as her guardian, Abel
then Richard Hill and was raised by Thomas and Naomi Meador. The final
return of the Estate shows
"Richard Hill was Marys' guardian, Guardian Returns 1807, 1808, 1809,
received her full share.
About 1809 Mary Hill married Mathew Hosch. Mathew and Mary moved to Walton
County, Georgia and were living there by 1823.
(See the Hosch Section, pages 141 to 200.
Confirming Mary's marriage to Mathew and ancestry, the following deed
is shown: "Fairfield Deeds,
Book BB, Page 15. "In 1819 Matthew Hosch and Wife Mary conveyed to John
Beam, Jr.. dated January 9,
1818 recorded Nov. 15, 1819. Witnesses: Edward Meador and Simeon Hill.
Conveyed 76 1/2 acres, being
part of late William Hill land, being part or share of said real estate laid
out to Mary Houch (late Mary Hill)
by a surveyor and Commissioner duly appointed by Court for the purpose of
dividing real estate of William
Hill amongst the whole of his children. Mary Houch being one of his, the
said Wm. Hill's daughters.
Located on Beaver Creek." (copied as written) /signed/ Matthew Houch
"Matthew Houch signs for himself and not by his mark."
