I took the following advise and it really worked. Lilly
Family Tree Maker includes a nifty utility, you user's may not be aware of,
called compacting files. Its main use is to recover space that is wasted
when pictures are added and removed. But, apparently a lot of space gets
wasted in every day use, as I only have about 10 pictures in my file of over
123,000 people. I try to compress my file every month or so, but I use my
file at least 12 hours a day 7 days a week. Most of can probably do it now
and it will be good for another year. As an example, I ran this utility on a
small 1,697 KB file and it came down to 1,693 KB, in about 5 seconds, saving
only 4 KB. But, my main file went from 60,338 KB to 47,540 KB, in about 10
minutes, saving almost 13 Megabits. This not only saves disk space, but
speeds up the operation of my file by almost 20%.
To check your savings, open your file in Family Tree Maker, click on Help,
Family File Status and write down your file size. Then, click Ok. Now, hold
down the control and alternate keys and press the C key. Release all keys.
When it finishes, it will save your file and return you to the same family
page you left. Now, click on Help and Family File Status again and compare
your before and after file sizes.
