Dear Carol,
My sources are limited. After 23 years of on and off searching for my
great grandmother, who I always knew as Mary ( but did not know her
maiden name was Hill), I finally found out all about her birth, and
death etc. I still do not know the dates of her marriage to my Gr. gr.
grandfather, Levi J. Reynolds. I know that as late as 1827 he and his
family were living in Avon, Livingston County, N.Y. (he was born in
1807, and so was his wife Mary Hill Reynolds). I assume so far that they
were married in Avon. However in the 1830 census they are seen in
Chautauqua Co. (Ripley), N.Y. I believe John Hill was living there
also. So maybe they were married before the 1830 census just after Levi
J. and his Parents, Levi and Lorena Reynolds, settled also in Ripley,
chautauqua Co., N.Y.
Now Mary's brother's included this David B. Hill, and Elijah W. Hill. I
believe anther brother was a Hiram Hill, b. 1804, in Vermont (Rutland),
as was the Father John. Now there was still another brother John W.
Hill also born 1804 (probably a twin brother of Hiram). Now it turns out
that my Great grandfather Thomas Benson Reynolds oldest sister, one
Melvia Reynolds, married a Hiram C. Hill. Probably a son of this Hiram
Senior.
Well, I found out finally this past year about most of this. It had
been Starring me in the face for at least 15-18 years. My Gr.
Grandfather and much of his family, including Mary his wife as well as
his Mother, Lorena, are all buried in Plot #199 of the Lena, Stephenson
Co., Illinois Cemetery. Right next to it is plot #200, which contains
at least 6 members of this Hill family. Further more, Melvia's husband,
Hiram C. Hill (Jr. ?). was a witness to the Last will and testament of
my Great Grandfather, Levi J. Reynolds. His sons, Thomas B. Reynolds
and Orville F. Reynolds were the executors of the estate. Then when I
obtained the obituary records of my Gr.gr. grandmother Mary Hill
Reynolds, it mentioned her two brothers, David B. and Elijah W. Hill.
Rather interestingly I had found a document several years ago in Lena,
as well as the 1850 census records, that mentions all of the above and
more.
Un fortunately, I do not find a Ebenezer or Eben. The circumstantial
evidence is too great to ignore, when you mention Rutland, N.Y. I
thought at first that the name was a mistake, when it mentioned that as
the birthplace of Mary, on her death record, in 1888. At the time she
was living in Galena Jo Davies Co., IL, next to Lena. As we had no
Reynolds living there at the time, I assume she was living with some
Hill family.
I know that Levi J. and family moved from Ripley, N.Y. to Lena, IL in
1845. No doubt the Hill family must have moved about the same time. It
makes sense that some of them stop off in Ohio. In fact Erie Co., PA,
is just over the line from Ripley, N.Y., and it is not far from there
into Ohio, and Erie Co., OH.
Well, good luck. I hope this helps. If you get clarification of any of
the above or what I mentioned to Bill Williams, I should be most
grateful. Perhaps we have some connection about 6 or so generations
ago. You might check these names in Vermont archives for Brandon
township, near Rutland, VT. in the 1780's and 1790's
