Subject: [HILL-L] Susannah Hill, d/o Jesse Hill m. William Cossey (Coursey)

Dear Hill researchers,

I am a Coursey researcher from SC, and have a good bit of information on one
Susannah Hill (Bet. 1784 - 1794) who married William Cossey per Jesse Hill's
will (d. ca July 17, 1820], Edgefield Dist, SC. I believe Susannah's husband
was William Coursey, and it is possible they are my missing link in SC.

I have proven back to my ggg-grandfather, Ewell/Uel/Newell Coursey, born in
1818, but cannot yet determine which Coursey is his ancestor. Since Uel is a
Hill family name, I have leaned toward this family, but I am still looking for
someone who has worked on the Susannah Line to help me out some with other
connections.

This is the outline as I have it of Jesse's wives and children:

There is debate about Jesse's wives.... LDS records certainly don't help any:
IGI Record Batch# F823364, Sheet 4 - Susannah b. 1789 SC to Jesse Hill and Mrs
Elizabeth Hill
IGI Record Batch# 8530805, sheet 17 - Susannah b. 5 Aug 1794, Randolph Co., NC
to Jesse and Mary Prichard or Pritchard
IGI Record Film# 447934 - Susannah b 5 Aug 1794, Dack Creek, Guilford, NC to
Jesse Hill and Mary Pritchard
IGI Record Film# 457363 -Susannah b 5 Aug 1794, NC to Jesse and Mary Hill.

I know from deed records they were in Edgefield Co., SC by 1820:
1820 Jesse Hill to daughter Susanna Coursey beginning at the road where it
crosses the stream at the head of the branch where I now live, joining the land
of John Lyons, Esq. , running [east] direction to my back line of said land.
[spelled Susannah Cossey, believed to be Coursey] A William Coursey purchased
1 Bull and 1 saddle Nov 10 1820. On Dec 10, 1821 he purchases 1 grindstone, 1
[ ], 1 bed and furniture, 1 negro child Betsey

Deed Book 39, p. 151 - William and Susannah Coursey both of Edgefield District
for $150 paid by John Lyons for plantation /lands lying on waters of Stephens
Creek .. annexed plat doth represent 23 May 1822 in the presence of Joshua
Harris and Thomas Garrett. /s/ William Coursey Susannah Coursey (her mark)
Susannah appeared before William Thurmond and relinquished all her interest and
estate ..freely relinquishes her dower rights May 31, 1822. This deed had a
plat but it is very difficult to read.

If anyone has anything on this marriage of Susannah Hill to William Coursey,
with date, location, and desperately needed list of children, I would
appreciate it.

Following are my Virginia HILL roots. Any connections?

Melissa Hill Dees
Decatur, AL

Descendants of James S. HILL

Generation No. 1

1. JAMES S.1 HILL (Source: Will dated 7/19/1842 listing Samuel S. as son.) was born Bef. 1775 (Source: 1820 Prince Edward Co., VA Census.), and died 1842 in Prince Edward Co., VA (Source: Will dated 7/19/1842 listing Samuel S. as son.). He married LUCY MATHEWS (Source: Marriage record.) October 10, 1798 in Prince Edward Co., VA (Source: Marriage Bonds & Ministers' Returns of Prince Edward Co., VA 1754-1810.), daughter of PHILIP MATHEWS.

Notes for JAMES S. HILL:
In response to your query about the parentage of Samuel HILL, I have found the following information at the Library of Virginia. In the 1820 Virginia Census there are 9 Hill families listed in Prince Edward County. Until 1850 only head of household was listed by name, but of these 9 there are only 4 who were listed as having male children between the ages of 0 and 10. I made a transcription of that census for your information. Taking this information, I then checked for wills for these four men in Prince Edward County in hope of finding some list of children. I was only able to find two names, James and Robert. The will of James Hill from July 19, 1842 lists his son Samuel S. Hill as executor. He also lists a daughter Susan M. and his wife Lucky or Sucky. The will for Robert Hill who died in 1863 lists only his son Robert. I also checked deeds, but was unable to find any listing lands which might have been deed to a Samuel HILL by his father. In the thoughts that the Ja!
mes HILL might be yours, I found a marriage record for him which lists his wife as Lucy MATTHEWS, married in 1798.

Children of JAMES HILL and LUCY MATHEWS are:
2. i. SAMUEL S.2 HILL, b. Abt. 1811, VA; d. Bet. 1850 - 1860, Tennessee?.
ii. SUSAN M. HILL.

Generation No. 2

2. SAMUEL S.2 HILL (JAMES S.1) was born Abt. 1811 in VA (Source: 1850 Gibson Co., TN census.), and died Bet. 1850 - 1860 in Tennessee?. He married MARTHA HILL November 18, 1833 in Prince Edward Co., VA. She was born Abt. 1813 in VA (Source: 1850 Gibson Co., TN census.), and died Bef. 1870 in Tennessee? (Source: 1870 Gibson Co., TN Census.).
