J.Senator John Hill 3/, born on the 9th of September 1797 at Germantown,
Stokes County, N.C. I personally think his birth date is wrong and should
probably be 1787 but it has been listed as 1797 in two different sources,
this is listed as such. He died on the 25th of May 1861 at Raleigh, Wake
County, N.C., the day before N.C. seceded from the Union. He married Julia
Crawford in 1819. He served various times for the government from 1819
until his death. He was Clerk of Court for Stokes Co., N.C.
buried in the old burying grounds in that county. He was educated in
University of NC, was elected seven times to the legislature and once in
Congress in 1839. He was opposed to secession and against his will was
appointed to the convention that carried the state out of the Union. He said
that if there was secession he did not want to live and during the
convention he was stricken with apoplexy and died. Source of the above
Information was from a letter from Capt Robert Hill's grandson, filed at
Wake Forest, N.C. University Library; Stokes County Will Book 3, Page 277
and family group sheets by Mrs. M.L. Vernon of Stoneville, N.C.
