Hi Ray,

Records are held in the UK National Archives at Kew in London (I know
this isn't of great use to you!). There are records of Established staff
(Ages & Capability Books), but the ones I've seen don't cover Extra Men.
I have not worked forward as far as 1881, but so far the only reference
I've found to them is in Correspondence. Retained Customs records are
very variable, depending on date and location. I doubt whether you would
find date or place of birth, unless he later became permanent.
Possible places to assist (other than the National Archives) may be the
Customs Museum at Liverpool (for info about the work he carried out) or
the Liverpool Records Office.

As far has how they were employed, at Cowes it seems to have been word
of mouth and seamanship ability.
