Subject: [HM-C&E] John VERO Excise Officer in 1700
Date: Fri, 16 Feb 2007 18:01:40 +0000 (GMT)
Greetings listers,
I have just discovered this new(ish) mailing list
& I am seeking help about John VERO.
Some years ago, when first searching for my
VERO/VEROW ancestors, I discovered correspondence
in the files about John VERO who was moved from
Worcestershire to Newcastle/Tyne to sort out some
problem of collusion between the Excise Officer
and the Licensed Victuallers in Newcastle. His
work saved some £4000 and the Lord Chancellor
awarded him a sum of £50.
I have copies of the relevant documents but have
not been able to place John in my family tree. I
think CUST 18 is the reference for the archives
of that time. Can anyone tell me whether there is
likely to be details of John VEROs appointment
and service in these volumes?
I believe John could not have been a native of
Worcestershire or Northumberland to be appointed
to these areas. Is my belief correct?
Thank you for reading this. I hope someone can
help.
Graham VEROW in Worcestershire.
