Hi,

Customs 18 is an excellent record of Customs staffing and gives a list
of Officers at all Customs ports, unfortunately it does not include
Excise Officers (as Excise was a separate Department until 1912). I
don't know of any similar listings for Excise Officers, although a
possibility would appear to T 44 which is said to contain Pay Lists for
English Excise. I am also told (although I have not yet looked at them
myself) that the Excise Minute Books, Customs 47 running from 1695 to
1865 contain details of all Excise Appointments and are indexed at the
beginning of each one. Unfortunately, they only run for short periods
and there are some 750 volumes! but could be useful if you have a
specific date. All such records require a visit to the National Archives
to see them, they are not on line and in view of the quantity I doubt
whether they ever will be.

There is a useful National Archives Research Guide on Customs & Excise
at
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=234
which I would recommend to anybody researching this area.
