Trevor

The officer mentioned below as being killed in 1981 by a serving member of
the Dept was Ivan Toombs (a major in the UDR as I recall) but Ivan, as far
as I recollect, was never a member of the Waterguard.

Two officers were killed by crossfire (IRA were firing at the Britsih Army)
at Killeen Land Boundary Post on 27 November 1971 - their names were Ian
Hankin, Land Preventive Man and Jimmy O'Neill a long serving cleaner. I have
a copy newspaper report somewhere if you'd like it.

Nine officers were killed on 22 August 1972 in an explosion at the Newry
Custom House but again, as far as I recollect, none of them were former
Waterguard members.

Eric

Subject: [WATERGUARD] Waterguard web site - was 'Potential Bond Item'

Hi All

From the messages forwarded to me - the subject apparently originated
by Ken & Elspeth Travers <> - and which I
have reproduced below, it would appear that what is required is some
sort of 'Roll of Honour' commemorating C&E officers who were killed or
injured by 'terrorists' whilst serving in Northern Ireland.

I am willing to create such a 'Roll of Honour' on the Waterguard web
site, but with the condition that it commemorates only Waterguard
Officers who were so killed or injured whilst serving in Northern
Ireland between the years 1809 and 1972 by 'terrorists' of either
persuasion!

If you have the names of any candidates for such a 'Roll of Honour',
please forward them to me with the following details:

# Name
# Rank
# Port or Station
# Date killed or injured
# Circumstances of incident including who, if any body, claimed
responsibility.

Please see the comments below. My object was as suggested by Ted ie that
these officers should not go unnoticed especially now that the
Department`s history is in danger by being overshadowed by the dreaded
Inland Revenue murky past! It seems the Bond does not have any readers
in NI. Perhaps your`s would have some input on this matter. My memory is
that both incidents occurred at the Newry Border post.
