Hello Terry,
Your Cortland M. Hobson is the son of Caleb Hobson, son of William, who is
the son of Joseph Hobson and Ann Scoggin. Joseph and Ann Scoggin married in
York County PA or near by. Joseph and Ann marriage record has not been
located. Several researchers believe they marr late in 1777 or early 1778. You
can find your line from Francis Hobson of Ballyhagen County Armagh Ireland.
The Hobson were originally from England but were in Ireland about 200 years.
I will help you a long but I do want to publish my 30 years of research.
There are a few correction in the Quaker Records that were recorded incorrectly
and I would like to pass that info along to you so you will not pass along
the incorrect info.
This info was taken in part from “The Descendants of Francis Hobson
Immigrant Ancestor” by Brenna Hobson Budd.
This book is not in any libraries but may be found in Ohio “First Families
of Ohio” There does not seem to be any more info in this book about Cortland.
If I find more I'll send it along. Now that you know what line to follow
and where to look you should be able to find a lot more on your grandfather.
If this has helped you please let me know. I took time to look this info up
and will be glad to if I can help you further.
[Hinshaw Quaker Records: Vol. IV Ohio, page 476 in the Plymouth-Smithfield
Monthly Meeting Records under Hobson: "1817,5,29. William, son of Jos. and
Ann (Scoggins) Hobson of Jefferson Co. 0hio; married in Cross Creek Monthly
Meeting, Mahale Plummer, daughter of Joseph and Mary, Jefferson Co., Ohio"
"No date. Wm. and M. Ch: Joseph P. d 1818, 4.28. bur. Richmond, Mary T. d
1819.11,6 bur. Richmond, OH"
1820 Federal Census lists him as having one son and one daughter both
under 10 and a wife between 16-26 living in Salem, Jefferson Co. Ohio.
Many facts given by Alden Hobson & Edith Hobson Burt. February 1942. This
information also stated that he ran a mill on Claylick Creek, Jefferson County
,Ohio with a death date of 3 Sept. 1822.
"History of Harrison Co. Ohio" Notes "William Hobson was born in Pa., in
1792. and came to Ohio with his parents in 1807. He built the first grist mill
in Salem township, using water as a power; as the country became cleared the
water grew less, and there not being sufficient to run the mill, in the summer
of 1822, Mr. Hobson was obliged to arrange his mill to run by horse power,
which he barely lived to see completed, as he was out only a few days before
his death to see it started. William Hobson was a member of the society of
Friends; his wife was a member of the Presbyterian church.
William was the father of one child, Caleb, who was born in Frederick
County. MD, in 1788. Caleb Hobson grew to manhood on his father's old farm, which
his father had left him at his death. The farm contained twenty acres, and the
mill was located on this land. When Mr. Hobson became of age he sold his
property and bought a small farm about three miles from the old homestead. May
29, 1845, he married Miss Sarah Ann Moore, born March 6, 1826, a daughter of
John and Sarah All (Donahue) Moore, natives of Ireland. Caleb Hobson and wife
were parents of five children, viz: Mahala Ann, wife of Lewis N. Carman,
farmer in German township; Mary Samantha. wife of William Spruins, of Jefferson
County ,Ohio; Euphemia, wife of Jonas Groves, of Jefferson County Ohio, Elmer
Y. and Cortland M. at home. " ]
Hope I've helped you.
