DATABASE OF THE DAY (Free for 10 Days!)

Working Christian, Deaths and Marriages, 1866-1887

Similar to The Southern Christian Advocate, The Working Christian
was an unofficial publication for the Methodist Conferences in
the states of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Included in
the publication of this periodical were numerous death and
marriage notices. This database contains issues from 1866 to 1887
and has nearly 4500 notices. Information from each notice often
includes location of event, the reverend attending the ceremony,
and attending witnesses, where appropriate. Some notices even
include birthplace. Since South Carolina did not require marriage
licenses until the 20th century, this database can be immensely
helpful to the researcher looking for South Carolina ancestors.

Bibliography: Holcomb, Brent H. "The Working Christian, Death and
Marriage Notices, 1866-1887." Columbia, SC: SCMAR, 1993.

community with valuable research tools, Ancestry.com is happy to
announce the following "Family History Favorites":

This interesting site maintains an incredible, well-organized
array of links to information, databases, and resources. Topics
of interest include the Irish, Mennonites, New Jersey, Palatines,
Huguenots & Walloons, as well as a number of general interest
sections like Search Engines, Resources, Neat Places to Visit,
and more.

Connecticut Gravestone Network
http://members.aol.com/ctgravenet/index.htm

"Organized in 1995, The Connecticut Gravestone Network's purpose
is to educate the public on how important old graveyards &
cemeteries are to history, and that gravestone carving is a
valuable art form." The society's site is a must-see for
individuals or societies with an interest in restoring or reading
old tombstones. Important dos and don'ts, before and after
pictures, a page that lists recently stolen memorial art, links
to related sites, and most importantly, ways in which individuals
and societies can become involved in saving these important
pieces of our history are all included at this site.

This award will be presented every Wednesday to sites that
provide valuable information to researchers.
