DATABASE OF THE DAY (Free for 10 Days!)
History of Northwestern Arkansas
This large database is a history of northwestern Arkansas. It is
also a collection of biographies of persons who lived in that
area. It covers the time from the arrival of European explorers
to about 1885. A wide range of information is contained within
the work, including lists of elected officials, genealogies, and
the economic foundations of some communities. The biographies are
rich in detail, sometimes anecdotal, and helpful in tracing lines
of descent.
Bibliography: History of Benton, Washington, Carroll, Madison,
Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian Counties, Arkansas. Chicago:
The Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1889.

AND
Country Study of the Philippines
This country study provides information about the history,
economy, politics, and society of the Philippines. More than an
update of the 1983 edition, this resource was designed by the
Library of Congress in an effort to provide valuable facts
concerning this diverse nation. This database contains
significant material useful to the researcher looking into
Philippine ancestry. Although not a database with defined lists
of names, it is an aid to persons trying to understand the larger
culture and context in which their ancestor lived.
Bibliography: Mortimer, Louis R. ed. "The Philippines, A Country
Study." Washington, D.C.: Library of Congress, 1991.

FAMILY HISTORY FAVORITE AWARDS
In recognition of excellence in providing the genealogical
community with valuable research tools, Ancestry.com is happy to
announce the following "Family History Favorites."
Oregon-California Trails Association
http://calcite.rocky.edu/octa/octahome.htm
This non-profit organization "headquartered in Independence,
Missouri, is dedicated to education about, preservation, and
enjoyment of the trans-Mississippi emigrant trails." OCTA's
publications include the "Graves and Sites on the Oregon and
California Trails: A Chapter in OCTA's Efforts to Preserve the
Trails," "Emigrant Trails Historic Studies Series" (monograph
series of emigrant diaries), the "Overland Journal," and a
quarterly newsletter, "News from the Plains." Web site features
include a mailing list, news of preservation efforts, trail
photos, facts, stories, maps, and much more. Of particular
interest to genealogists is the Census of Overland Emigrant
Documents (COED). This project involves the surveying of emigrant
documents that describe life on the trails, and OCTA is in the
process of incorporating this information into a database. Name
searches of the database can be done for $10 ($8 for OCTA
members).
