I'm not sure if I understand. I don't think there is any doubt that William who died in 1807 is the one who married Susannah Lovell, and who had a son William Jr., because the chancery suit identifies his heirs. The Douglas Register is not complete. I think in one place the Rev. William Douglas mentions that a year or two of records are missing (in the 1760s IIRC). William Hodges m. Susannah Lovell was probably born in the latter 1730s, so he was about 70 when he died.
There is also a series of chancery suits involving Welcome William's family. His son William lived in Louisa, not in Goochland. He also had a son William but that William moved to Kentucky. He came back to get involved in the estate proceedings of his Uncle Jesse, but he lived in Kentucky.
I agree that the case that William who married Susannah Lovell is a son of John Hodges is circumstantial, and depends on inferences from the tithe rolls and the fact he is not mentioned as an heir of Jesse Hodges, son of Welcome William.

Bob. From your link below: The William Sr., that died in 1807 in Goochland, was the son of Welcome William, not John. John's William did not have a son William (unless he died at child birth and was not listed in the Douglas Register therefore). I don't know when John's William died or where. He may have been the William HODGES that died in Goochland in 1817 or had left with his Father John, who disappeared from Goochland in the 1750/60s.
I don't know when George Byerly did his reconstruction of the tithables in Goochland, but I went through them at LVA in 2003 after corresponding with Dolores Rutherford, who made an abstract in 1989 of the Goochland County tithables from 1747-1774, as well as an indexed Goochland County Deeds, Wills and Inventories from 1728-1826 for the HODGES. I purchased both of these and have them in my HODGES' file. I also concluded that John had a William. This however is not proof (strong circumstantial evidence though) that the William that appeared first in the 1756 tithables, in John's household, was the one that married the next year to a Susanna LOVEL(L) in Goochland.
BTW, Welcome William's son William appeared in the tithables in 1754 in his Father's household for the first time.
