Hi, all.

Although many researchers seem to think that the change to the name
Hoisington was pretty much accomplished by 1750, I have found MANY
Hoisingtons using variations (including HORSINGTON) until the mid 1800s.
Some people changed their names in mid-stride, going from Hoisington>
Hossenton>Hyselton> Hoisington during their lifetimes and, in other cases,
members of the same sibling group would use different spellings. So, when
you're going through records, LOOK FOR EVERY POSSIBLE SPELLING VARIATION
THAT YOU CAN THINK OF! I'm still trying to find out if the Hazeltons and
Hazeltines of VT are related.

The way I'm handling all these variations in my database is to use
Hoisington as the last name for everyone (so I can pull out all variants
when I want only a list of Hoisingtons) with all the variations the person
used in parentheses after the name. Because of cases like I listed above,
this might get too long to go in the Last Name field, and I have to come up
with an abbreviation list, i.e. "1" for Horsington, "2" for Hassenton, etc.
Fortunately, my new program (Reunion) will search for any letter
combination in a field. However, if I chose a letter rather than a number,
I would probably get every name in the database!
