Subject: HOISINGTON_MAILING_LIST - Msg#98-17 Early American Hoisingtons
Date: Tue, 20 Jan 1998 21:49:04 -0800 (PST)
Hi, all.
Some private e-mails that I received after posting the Rev. War Pension
abstracts reminded me that we have several new people on the list who have
not seen all the postings that have gone before. From those e-mails, it
looks like everyone has several pieces of the puzzle, but no one has all of
them.
It looks like it's time that I put together at least what I have on the
first couple of generations after "Sargeant John" and post it on the list.
Then I think I should post a recap of the Horsington info that has turned
up lately. New information has been coming in so hot and heavy on both the
New England Horsington/Hossenton/Hoisingtons, etc. and Virginia
Horsingtons that I haven't stopped to do that. It's been hard to even keep
up with entering it in my database.
For the "newbies" and "semi-newbies", some general information first.
Harry Hoisington's "Hoisingtons in America" is/was the basis for most of my
information (other than my own last 4 generations). However, he was a
terrible typist and I have seen remarks by other genealogists who quote
him, but indicate that he should be used for clues not facts, and that he
tends to list as facts "undocumented" information. The "undocumented
information" is mostly in the form of info that he received from family
members he interviewed or corresponded with, who may or may not have
"remembered" exactly. He did, however, do quite a bit of original research
and that is indicated in his book. And, as far as I have seen, his is the
most comprehensive survey of later generations. I have listed some of his
sources at the bottom of this e-mail.
Since I finished inputting Harry's manuscript, I have looked at a number of
his sources and other written sources. I have also taken information that
was given to me by people on this list and people I have corresponded with
by e-mail. I have tried to document the sources I have used in the
database as accurately as possible. I do have some info with no
documentation and am trying to reconstruct where I got it (This genealogy
business is going to make me organized, maybe after it wears me to a
frazzle.)
Anyway, I did get a new scanner, folks. Soon as I get it up and running
(I'm not what you'd call mechanical, even though I am a tech writer and
write installation manuals sometimes... or maybe that's why), I'll start
posting everything I have on the early Hoisingtons, possibly after the
weekend.
Harriette
BTW, if any of you have actually "seen" any of the following documents, I'd
love to hear what you gleaned from them (everyone has a different idea of
what's "important enough" to write down).
