Hi, all.

It was shortly after returning from meeting with the New York
representatives that Major Joab Hoisington was taken ill with smallpox and
died. According to Harry Hoisington (quoting Trumbell in "The History of
Northampton, Mass."), "this loathsome disease (small pox) was brought her
by Col. Hoisington in Dec., 1776. He was taken sick at Daniel Pomery's
tavern--known for many years as the Red Tavern--. He was removed to a place
hastily provided for his reception where he died in a short time." Also
according to Harry, "It was thought that he was buried in an unmarked spot
in the region called the 'Oxbow' VT."
Joab's trip to New York and his request for money to supply his men was
mentioned (although without mention of Joab) in Robinson's "Vermont, A
Study of Independence". According to the information that I have on Joab,
it seems that his contribution to Vermont and its defense over many years
have not been very well acknowledged. I have included some information on
his activities on his page on the Hoisington Family web site, but I am
still trying to get enough information to write a "fleshed-out" account of
his life. If anyone finds more information, I would appreciate a copy. I
am still trying to get a copy of the article on "Hoisington's Rangers"
that I heard about.
