In the corner behind the pulpit is the figure of a woman in flowing
drapery, reclining on her side and leaning her elbow on an urn. This
memorial was once fastened about 6 feet up the wall but in rebuilding of
1885 the present niche was made. The memorial is to Mary, daughter of
Samuel Dodington, and wife of Francis Reaston, 1798-1812, the Arms are
shown.
Over the pulpit is a marble tablet to George Dodington, d. 1757 aged
70, and George Dodington d. 1762 aged 1 year and 8 months. (Father and
son ? I think)
A brass to MArtha Wickman, d. 1737 aged 79. She gave rent of School
Ground for the education of poor children of the Parish, the Arms are
shown.
The unusual wrought iron chancel screen and pulpit are in memory of
Elizabeth, wife of Thomas MArriott-Didington, Rector of Stowell, 1887. A
rather washed out window in the chancel depicting St. Peter. Beloew it
(not connected), a brass to Rev. William Jepson, Rector from 1923-1931.
A similar faded window of St. James. Below it a brass to James
Lush, 1851-1878 and WIlliam Lush, 1852-1874.
A better-coloured window of St. John the Evangelist. Below it a
brass to William Gifford, and Benjamin and Alicia, his son and daughter,
1885.
The reredos, a painted relief of the Adoration of the Magi, is
Italian in origin. It is flanked by figures of St. George and St.
Michael, and is in memory of Theodore Bailward and John Prothero.
Installed in 1920, and extensions in 1929.
Back later with more, gotta run to town. I sure wish you guys couls see
these pictures in the book. If anyone wants, I will list the Rectors of
Horsington along with the dates. If I get to replies on the Rectors I
will not post them. It is up to the list on this one. There are dates
starting at 1305 and ending at 1990. The Rector list is up to this
list. There is a lot more in the book.
