I ordered and finally got a Hoisington Scroll. There are some very
interesting things on it esp. when it lists some of the different spellings
for Hoisington. So I thought I would post these and see if anyone else has
heard of any of these names or researched any of them. This may be a new way
for us to find someone. I would have just said to myself that everyone has
probably already done these names but an aunt found that the surname Ray we
had been working on and could not find was listed on some census records as
Roy, so I thought that maybe this would give us a few new ways to look. So
here it goes.
Ossington, Hossington, Hoissington, Osington, Ossinton, Hossinton, and
many others.
I have also myself heard it as Housington. Also from the scroll I will post
tidbits not in the order they appear (paragraph by paragraph order), because
it is copyrighted. These may also give us a new lead or two.
The surname Hoisington emerged as a notable family in the county of
Nottingham where they were anciently seated. During the time of the Norman
kings there were many feudal rebellions. Many barons attainted, traded their
lands, and moved their families out of royal influence, even into Scotland.
Amongst the many branches of this name were in Somerset and Derbyshire.
I underlined the places, they are not underlined on the scroll. Something I
find interesting is....
The Ossington estates were finally acquired by the Dennison family after
the main line of Ossington became extinct. Junior branches continued.

So will somebody please tell me what they mean by the main line being extinct
and the junior lines carrying on? I thought it would mean that the males of
the line all died, and that a female that had married named a child with that
last name instead of her married name. For example Mary Hoisington married a
John Smith, but she named her son Robert Smith Hoisington. Am I grasping at
something that is not here on this one? Or is it just too early in the
morning for me to be doing this? OK my new stuff is here so off to surf
awhile I go. Have fun cuzzies.
