Harriette,
Middletown Springs, Vermont is in Rutland County about 20 miles SE of the
city of Rutland. It is adjacent to the towns of Ira, Tinmouth and Wells.
It is very close to the NY border, and I think that my Parker ancestors went
back-and-forth across the border in the early 1800s, making it very hard to
pinpoint them. I found it quite a coincidence that my definite grandparents
lived next door to Hoisingtons/Barbers who were later to become relatives
via a shortlived tryst by my grandmother. Could they have known each other
because of their grandparents and parents having been neighbors?
This may be clutching at straws, but that's often what genealogy is all
about. If you all want a real challenge, try tracking down the correct
Parkers in New England in the 1800s. I've found at least two towns in
Vermont that claim to have been called Parkersburg at one time. They are
Mendon and Middletown Springs. To add to the problem, my Parkers were from
the wrong side of the tracks, so no one has ever wanted to find out anything
about them. I hope that somewhere back there they were connected to early
Parkers that are documented and just drifted off into obscurity for a few
generations. We have it comparitively easy in tracking Hoisingtons. Of
course, that tends to make it more fun. At least you know there is a needle
somewhere in that haystack .
Thanks to everyone for your help.
