[470] CAPT. WILLIAM HUNTER,6 (David,5 Hopestill Hamlin,4 Ebenezer,3 James,2
1) b. Sharon, Ct., Jan. 3, 1754; m. Windsor, Vt., Jan., 1777, Mary Newell. He
settled in Windsor, Vt., and we learn from the centennial exercises of that
town, that after the battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill, and the capture of
Ticonderoga, in the summer of 1775, he became the orderly sergeant of Capt.
John Grant's Co., and joined the regiment at Crown Point; which descended the
lake to Canada, being then 21 years of age, and took part in the capture of
St. John and Montreal. He was attached to the person of Gen. Montgomery, and
for good conduct was made 1st Lieut. The term of service of the men having
expired, Hunter returned for recruits, in Dec., 1775; and early in Jan.,
1776, marched away on snow shoes to Whitehall, N. Y., thence down the lake on
the ice to the army destined for Quebec, and finally encamped on the Plains
of Abraham. In the retreat in the spring this regiment was the last to leave
the field, and were rear guard. On the march he discovered a sick soldier
left by the way to die, whom he assisted by carrying him on his back three
miles to the batteaux, and thus saved his life. Under Capt. Benjamin Wait and
Major Joab Hoisington they were the troops which kept back the English and
Indians from the northern towns. Declining a captaincy in the Continental
service, he was Lieut, in the Windsor company (of militia) under Capt. Samuel
Stowe Savage, and succeeded him as captain, 1789. He was member of Congress;
Judge of Probate, and Councillor. He d. Windsor, Vt., Nov. 30, 1827; she d.
Westport, N. Y. Apr. 26, 1844.
