Hi, All.
The list is currently being hosted by the rootsweb.com server. However,
there are a lot of changes going on with the rootsweb organization, and
some of them are of concern to me.
1) There has been a change in the Acceptable Use Policy, which mirrors the
ones at Yahoo and Geocities posted recently, in that the archived messages
of the mailing lists posted after a specific date are no longer the
property of the poster (you guys), but the property of rootsweb. That
means that rootsweb has announced that it claims ownership of the material
posted and that it also claims the right to reproduce it in any way it sees
fit. While nothing has been specifically stated about putting it on CDs
and selling it, that is an option. Many of us have posted research that
took us a great deal of time to get together, and others have posted
personal information on what we thought was a "private" mailing list.
2) Cluster surname mailing lists are being set up at rootsweb which, in
many cases, duplicate already-existing lists. These duplicate lists are
not being offered first to the hosts of the existing lists. In any case,
these cluster list owners MUST agree to the rootsweb Acceptable Use Policy.
There are also rotating taglines (sorta like the signature line on my
postings), which are used for advertising.
3) None of this was discussed with the listowners beforehand and
constitutes a complete turnaround in rootsweb's original agreement with
existing listowners.
4) Anyone who has criticized this new policy has been treated rudely and/or
"banned" from using rootsweb facilities.
So, what all this means is I would like to find out how you feel about
moving the Hoisington Mailing List. This assumes that I can find another
free home for it, AND one that will agree that anything we post on this
list belongs to us. If we decide that moving is the way to go, I will
request that ALL Hoisington Mailing List archives be removed from rootsweb
and sent to me for safekeeping until we can find a place where they will
not be subject to commercial exploitation.
Harriette
