In answer to the original question as to why so many different spellings of
a name.... 1. The level of literacy of the individual giving the
information, as well as the person taking it, 2. how well a person taking
the information could hear, or how interested they were in the work, 3. the
accent or dialect of a person giving the information 4. known or accepted
spellings of a name....would be a few reasons. In my Humphries surname
search, I have counted over 40 ways to spell it, including Umphress,
Pumphreys and Humphreys.
